Raids

What is a Raid Battle?
A Raid Battle is a cooperative gameplay experience that encourages Pokémon Go Trainers to work with each other to defeat an extremely powerful Pokémon known as the Raid Boss. This Raid Boss Pokémon will have much more CP than that of standard captured Pokémon.

For example, a single Trainer’s Pokémon may have 3,000 CP, while the Raid Boss may have 20,000 CP. Therefore, to successfully win a Raid Battle, players must team up (up to 20 players can team up in a single Raid) to defeat the powerful Raid Boss.

Why Should You Participate in a Raid Battle?
Defeating a Raid Boss will reward participants with a variety of rewards; some of which can only be obtained by defeating a Raid Boss. These rewards may include the following:

Rare Candy: Can be used on a Pokémon, and turns into that specific Pokémon’s Candy.

Golden Razz Berry: Can be used on wild Pokémon to greatly increase your chances of capture. These can also be used on a Pokémon assigned to a Gym to fully recover its motivation meter.

Technical Machine (TM): Can be used to permanently teach a Pokémon a new Fast or Charge Move.

Premier Ball: These Pokéballs are used specifically to capture Raid Boss Pokémon after defeating them. Once you run out of Premier Balls the Raid Boss will flee.

When/Where Do Raids Take Place?
Raid Battles take place at Gyms. Before a Raid Battle begins, a large Egg with a countdown above it will appear atop of the Gym. During this time, players will travel to that specific Gym. Once the countdown reaches zero, the Raid Boss will be revealed and Trainers can begin the Raid.

How Do Raids Work?
A Trainer must meet a certain required Trainer Level and must have a Raid Pass to participate in a Raid. A Raid Pass can be acquired for free by visiting a Gym (one per day). You can also purchase a Premium Raid pass from the in-game shop if you wish.

If both requirements are met, a Trainer may join a Raid once the Egg timer countdown reaches zero. Once the Raid begins players can choose their six Pokémon and begin attacking the Raid Boss. The goal is to reduce the HP of the Raid Boss to zero before the five minute timer runs out.
If you do not defeat the Boss within the five minutes of alotted time, you may heal your Pokémon and try again, but the HP of the Boss will reset. If you cannot defeat the Raid Boss after one hour, the Raid will end you will not be given a chance to capture it.

Once a Raid Boss is defeated each Trainer that participated will receive rewards including Premier Balls. The more damage a Trainer has done to the Raid Boss the more Premier Balls he or she will earn. These premier balls can be used to capture Raid Bosses.

Raid Results From Lvl 40 Trainer
The following information was posted by sts_ssp on Reddit. He did five Raids in Tokyo on June 23, 2017.
Raid 1: Level 2 raid, CP 11311 Electabuzz
Level 2 raid at a Mc Donald pokestop. Hopped off the train at Ebisu station. The raid only had 9 minutes left, and while there was clearly players around, I was left alone to fight it, since the others had probably cleared it much earlier. Not a good idea to be late for a raid.
But it was only Electabuzz, and a single Rhydon was enough to beat him with time to spare. Reverted to a 84% level 20 1228CP Thunder Shock/Thunderbolt one. By the way, the level 20 versions don't seem to always have the same attacks as the boss version. Was very easy to catch with one Premiere Ball. You have the choice of what berries you
use, but for balls you are limited to the premiere ones.
Got:
  • 4 revives
  • 2 Golden Razz
  • 3 rare candies
Raid 2: Level 3 raid difficulty 2, CP 21155 Overheat Flareon
Went off at the next station, Shibuya. Took down the Mystic and Instinct gym at the Hachiko statue (most famous smeeting place in Tokyo just near Shibuya's crossing, the world's busiest crossing http://i.imgur.com/cCWMhay.jpg ) and surprisingly my pokemon stayed 2 hours in these new Valor gyms. Imgur
Ignored 2 newly hatched level 2 raids (Magmar at a Softbank stop Imgur Imgur and Bayleef) and set my sight on an unhtached level 3 raid, which still had 45 minutes before starting. Slowly made my way to the Mc Donald while grinding, and there was a surprising number of players in the shop, which was clearly sized for a smaller affluence. Mc Donald must be satisfied to be a sponsor. Once the egg hatched, the raid lobby was immediately filled with 20 players. 5 level 40 players including myself and mostly level 37-39 ones for the others.
The application crashed when the raid started. By the time I went back, I had to join a group of 5 players. But we're talking about Flareon. Only one Vaporeon was enough (damage seemed split over people ?). I feel I could have killed it solo.
Reverted to a 91% level 20 1635CP Fire Spin / Flamethrower one. Caught in 1 curved excellent throw.
Got:
Raid 3: Level 4 raid difficulty 3, 28485 CP Overheat Charizard
Still in Shibuya, went back near the station, noticed a soon to happen raid (Mc Donald) with a 1h15 pre-notice on an Instinct gym. Since there is substantioal premeire ball bonus if you are in the gym, I planned to take the Instinct gym just before the raid start. I attacked when there was 35 minutes left, but Instinct players dropped berries. Carried on and some other players joined. But as instinct was losing 4-5 defenders, they somehow managed to add more (I thought you couldn't ?). The next combat window after what should have been the last fight kept on giving me new pokemons to face. Other players
backed off, I pursued the attack and once they were damaged enough, the other guys joined too.
At some point it was 6 pokemons at once vs Instinct pokemons. Destroyed the gym with 5 minutes left before the raid, dropped a 3160 Blissey and an another guy put a Tyranitar (other players must have been Mystic). Fed berries to the Blissey. The other trainers weren't able to flip the gym wih only 5 minutes on the timer, and the raid started on an owned Valor gym, as planned. Imgur Imgur. As players get more used to raid mechanics, there will be more and more pre-raid ownership wars.
The raid itself was unremarkable Imgur. There was 20 players (6 level 40), Charizard went down in 30 seconds (180s timer). Reverted to a 80% level 20 1489 CP Fire Spin / Overheat one. I didn't regret getting bonus premiere balls Imgur in addition to the raid ones, because he took 8 balls to catch. By the way, I havent yet watched the videos from all over the world, but in Japan the raids ambiance was a bunch of people standing in the same place without speaking at all.
  • 15 revives
  • 15 Golden Razz
  • 3 rare candies
  • No TM :(
There was always at least 2 raids happening in Shibuya and that's only sponsored stops. Don't know if Niantic raised the probability for the prerelease, but it doesnt seem that raids will be rare.
Raid 4: Level 4 raid difficulty 3, 26921 CP Solar Beam Venusaur
Next station, Harajuku, on the crowded "fashion street" http://i.imgur.com/E3uJpHj.jpg . Again a Mc donald gym Imgur . A dozen of trainers standing in front of Mc Donald. Unremarkable again (the Solar Beams were instant kill though), Venusaur got rekt hard by the group of 13 people. Reverted to a disappointing 73% level 20 1413 CP Razor Leaf / Sludge Bomb Venusaur.
  • 6 revives
  • 6 Golden Razz
  • 6 rare candies
  • No TM :(
Raid 5: Level 4 raid difficulty 4, 25419 CP Hyper Beam Snorlax
Tokyo suburbia as I was dropping at my station. Mc Donald again. The 4 previous raids had let me disappointed by how easy they were (but we had many players).
But this one felt epic. Snorlax is probably the most difficult level 4 raid after Blissey. We were 5-6 trainers only (me level 40, 2 level 38, 3 level 37) and the raid had a 17 persons
recommendation. Things didn't went well. I used 2 Counter Close Combat Machamps, 1DT/Hu Dragonite, 2 DB/DC Dragonites and 1 DT/DC Dragonite but that wasn't enough to take Snorlax down. Timout timeout and timeout. But a lot of these failures are also the fault of the application's horrid performance in gyms. I had a lot of deathloop scenario, and sometimes a killed attacker was taking 10 seconds to be replaced by the next in line.
The first attempt failed while Snorlax had only 5% Health left. Also, one of the guy was using Blissey/Snorlax to attack, horrible choice. At some point there was 7 players. The 180 second fights against Snorlax felt epic, and an Hyper Beam from a 25xx Xnorlax is no joke (usually used 4-5 per fight. After 7 or 8 failed attempts I was really doubting we could win. At 6 min left before the end of the raid, an anoher player joined, and it turned out to tip the scale enough to beat Snorlax, with 4 seconds left on the round timer. Everybody's Machamps, while frail, were clearly doing the larger part of the damage until they were all killed, and then the Dragonites were following at a slower pace. Was satisfied to get a +3 Premiere ball award for the damage infllicted. Don't known if it's based on a ranking or if it's based on damage thresholds. Imgur
The Snorlax became a 80% level 20 1862 CP ZH/HB Snorlax
  • 10 Revives
  • 4 Golden Razz
  • 6 rare candies
  • 1 quick move TM
I was hesitating about maxing a 3rd Machamp (since I have 2 level 39 Counter/Close Combat ones), but the Snorlax raid makes me think that using the TM on my 100% Bullet Punch / Dynamic Punch Machamp (to get Counter) and axing him to level 39 wouldn't be a waste for future Snorlax/Blissey raids. 2 level 39 Machamps weren't enough, and the Dragonite's DPS were inferior.

Non trivial raids are fun, and I am impatient to see legendary raids. But the application bugs and slowdowns put an artificial difficulty that shouldn't be there.
Raids are nie, but in contrast, the gym overhaul is so horrible regarding team dominance (dominant team becoming even stronger) that I alsmot consider stopping doing gyms altogether.

March 29th Update - Locations,Types, Badges and More!

Niantic has just announced the start of the Japanese Pokemon Go Field Test and some testers have already shared information from the Pokemon Go APK. An APK is an Android application package file used to install App software and middleware onto Google's Android operating system.

Based on these new details, here are 14 new pieces of information about Pokemon Go:

#1. Generation One Pokemon Confirmed
There were a total of 151 Pokemon data files found in the Pokemon Go APK. We already know from the Official Trailer that many of the Gen One Pokemon would be in the game. However, this new information confirms the fact that all 151 original Pokemon from Pokemon Red & Blue will be in Pokemon Go!

In Pokemon Go, these Pokemon will be classified as Normal, Legendary and Mythic depending on Pokemon Rarity. Mythic Pokemon may not be catchable in the Wild, but instead may be a reward from a Raid or require a very High Trainer Level plus a Master Ball.

#2. All 18 Pokemon Types Confirmed
Pokemon Go will have all Types of Pokemon, which include Water, Rock, Psychic, Poison, Normal, Electric, Ground, Ghost, Grass, Flying, Fire, Fighting, Ice, Dragon, Bug, Dark, Steel and Fairy. It will be interesting to see how much of an effect Pokemon Types will have in battles.

#3. Moves Confirmed
A total of 232 Pokemon Moves were found to be included in the game. Many of these moves are not in the original Red, Blue and Yellow games.

#4. Dodging
Just as in other Pokemon games, not all moves will have 100% accuracy. Pokemon will be able to dodge moves, resulting in zero damage taken. Lower accuracy moves will likely hit less, but do more damage. This will add a bit more luck and strategy to battles.

#5. Badges
In Pokemon Go, Badges will be awarded to players after completing certain achievements. These achievements will include (but are not limited to) Distance Walked Milestones, Pokemon Captured, Gyms Defended/Captured, Pokemon Evolved, Eggs Hatched, Total Encounters, Poke Balls Thrown, Unique Locations Visited (Eg. Pokestops, Gyms, Landmarks), Successful Raids, etc.. Badges will be displayed in the profile of each Trainer.

#6. Teams
Players will have the option of choosing one of three teams after reaching a certain point in the game. The three teams will be Red, Blue and Yellow. Players will want to join Teams to compete for Gym ownership and Prestige. The goal will be to work with your team in order to capture Gyms. You will then need to build up Gym defenses to defend against incoming challenges from the other two Teams.

#7. Natures
In other Pokemon games, a Pokemon’s Nature affects the growth of a Pokemon’s stats as it Levels up. In Pokemon Go, there will be seven different Natures. These include Assassin, Raider, Stoic, Guardian, Protector, Sentry and Champion.

Pokemon with the Assassin Nature may see its Attack Stat increase with each Level Up, but at the same time may see a decrease in its Defensive Stat. Pokemon with a Protector Nature may have just the opposite effect. This will add another strategic element to battles and Training in Pokemon Go.

#8. Evolution Shards
It has already been confirmed that evolving Pokemon will require Evolution Stones and multiple captures of the same Pokemon. However, rather than simply obtaining Evolution Stones, it seems that players will need to collect Evolution Shards first and combine them into Evolution Stones. Evolution Stones may still be differentiated by Type (Eg. Water, Fire, Grass).

#9. Trainer Profile Customization
It was just speculation at first, but it has now been confirmed that Trainers can be customized. There will be over fifty different items that can be acquired by users to customize his or her Trainer Avatar. As of now, these items will be purely cosmetic, meaning users will gain no stats or bonuses for equipping them.

#10. Level Cap & Inventory Space
Trainers will gain EXP by completing certain tasks in Pokemon Go. These tasks include earning badges, capturing Pokemon, winning battles, etc. As players progress through the game and Level Up they will be able to capture Pokemon with higher CP. The Trainer Level cap is currently set a Level 50.

Each player will have an Inventory, where items such as Poke Balls, Potions, Eggs, etc. can be stored. At this point each user will have an inventory limit of 1,000 items and 500 for Pokemon and Pokemon Eggs.

#11. In App Purchases
Although Pokemon Go will be Free to Play, there will be In-App purchases. Different types of items for purchase will include Poke Balls, Medicine, Food, Gems, Utilities, Boosts, etc. There will be four different Tiers of items, each more powerful than the previous. For example, Poke Balls, Great Balls, Ultra Balls and Master Balls will be available for purchase. Each will be more expensive than the previous Tier. For example, an Ultra Ball will cost much more than a standard Poke Ball.

#12. CP
CP will be a unique value assigned to each Pokemon. The higher the CP of a Pokemon the more difficult it will be to catch that Pokemon. It has been suggested that CP may refer to Combat Points or Crystal Points.

#13. Gym Points
Though no details have yet been released on Gym Points they may be acquired by capturing or defending in Gym battles. These points could be used for increasing Gym defense or improving the defensive stats of the Pokemon defending a Gym.

#14. Biomes/Locations
There are a variety of different locations on the Map where different Pokemon can be found. Biomes will likely have different backgrounds and encounters for Pokemon capturing and battles. Here is the current list of Biomes and speculation as to where certain Types of Pokemon may reside. Based on these locations, it looks like Grass and Water Types will be easier to find, but Types such as Fire, Dragon and Fairy may be more difficult to locate.
