Pokedex Entry #141: Kabutops is a Rock/Water Type Pokemon. It evolves from Kabuto.
Kabutops swam underwater to hunt for its prey in ancient times. The Pokémon was apparently evolving from being a water-dweller to living on land as evident from the beginnings of change in its gills and legs.

Hey, I just caught a Kabutops, I found it at night, around midnight, in a residential area; however I live in New Mexico which is known for fossils and might have to do with it.

If anybody else has any other info or something to follow up, please respond or post.

Nope. I caught one in Houston, TX of all places about 2:00 am. Just randomly appeared right outside my house

I caught one outside my house as well. It was around 9pm when it appeared on my nearby list at a residential area, in PA.
Side Rant: It took me about 30 pokeballs to catch and when I finally captured it, it only had 393cp.

Anyone know what the optimal moveset is? Also, is this pokemon strong?

Optimal moves depends. Fury cutter has low dps but best eps so good if you are using kabutops to attack. Mudshot is great dps. For specials obviously stone edge if you have fury cutter. If a defending Pokemon I'd probably be happy with water pulse since its same dps as ancient power basically BUT you get stab.

I'd probably want fury cutter/stone edge

I'd agree with above. My Kabutops is a monster with fury cutter/stone edge. So much fun to take gyms with him.

I just lucked out and got one at the Honolulu airport at 12:30 noon, worth 832 cp. Used lots of blue balls and razz berries- but with a number like that- I think he's worth it!

832 is crap

Lol, "832 is crap" You're right, thanks for the insight! I realize that now after playing for another week. You must recall the feeling when you first started out and all your guys are in the 300s ... and bam- poof....832 sounds amazing!

I caught one at 12:45am at a lake near my house. It also has a mountain behind. 646 cp in one greatball. And the same day evolve a monster 1375cp with mud shot and ancient power. Pretty good attacker

A while back I hatched a 95.6% IV Kabuto, and months ago evolved to Kabutops and got Fury Cutter(legacy)and Stone Edge. It's a beast in battle but it doesn't last long unfortunately.

i have a 100 percent IV kabutops with mud shot stone edge i think its only really best for attacking now because the movesets have changed for generation 2.
