Choosing Your Eevee! (Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon)

Most Trainers know that Eevee can evolve into either Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon. Many say that
Pokémon you get from evolving an Eevee is random. Others say that the final evolution of each Eevee is determined by its moveset.

However, it has recently been discovered that you can choose which Pokémon your Eevee will evolve into just by changing its name before evolving it.

Want a Vaporeon? Change the nickname of your Eevee to Rainer.

Want a Flareon? Change the nickname of your Eevee to Pyro.

Want a Jolteon? Change the nickname of your Eevee to Sparky.

Many have confirmed that this trick does work. I will try it as soon as I get 25 Eevee Candies. Feel free to try this trick and leave a comment below with the results!

It works! I had two jolteons, and a vaporeon and tried to get the flareon by naming my 352 eevee to pyro and sure as anything, it evolved into an 876 flareon. Coincidence? Maybe? But it worked for me.

Worked for me!! Did pyro

This trick works, tried it just now

Confirming it worked for me using Rainer to evolve a Vaporeon. Previous Eevee was a Flareon.

Me and several friends have done this now and it has worked 100% of the time. We made sure to name the eevee before hand to account for server lag and have gotten the desired evolution in total about 13 times.

So which is the better evolution to choose?

Works. 405 Eevee named Pyro evolved to a 1007 Flareon.

Anonymous said...

Can't believe it really worked!

Anonymous said...

Works!

Unknown said...

apparently the new update has disabled it

Kreacher said...

Worked fine today ended up with a 1463 vaporeon

Unknown said...

Worked for me with Sparky and Rainer. Make sure to maybe capitalize as youre naming :D

Anonymous said...

It worked for my first Eevee, I evolved my second Eevee today naming it Rainer.. turned out a Jolteon.

Anonymous said...

It worked for my first Eevee. When I evolved my second Eevee it turned into Jolteon even though I named it Rainer.

Anonymous said...

Flareon is trash
So is jolteon

Anonymous said...

First time I tried it 4 days ago, Rainer worked for vaporeon... Tried it twice two days ago and both times it failed, got a flareon and jolteon. Either it got disabled, I was lucky the first time, or having two named Rainer at the same time disabled it.

Unknown said...

didnt work

Anonymous said...

did work for the first 3 i did but tried again and did not work

Anonymous said...

It might have been "DISABLED". It always works for me before 8/8 but today I evolved 5 Eevees. Three of them FAILED 2/5. I was so sad my 800+CP Eevees turned to Jolteons..

Anonymous said...

Agreed, it's either disabled or maybe there's another beta bug. Got my first Sparky/Jolteon. I changed its name back to Jolteon and named another Eevee Sparky... it evolved to Vaporeon. Tried again, Vaporeon again. I'm in Florida, I'm surrounded by water, and therefore water-type Pokemon. Another Jolteon would be great, please.

Anonymous said...

It stopped working...

Only Evolution worth having is vaporeon because of watergun and it's HP. fact that an equal cp perfect move set jolteon can not come close to beating a vaporeon and it's sad, vaporeon has twice it's HP, and since the games scaling is so small, it renders nearly all pokemon useless to beat vaporeon outside of perfect move set snorlax, lapras, other vaporeons, exeggcutor, dragonite (incredibly hard to get a even remotely good dragonite, if it doesn't have dragon breath its next to transfer fodder or awaiting to pawn him off to some newbie player for a decent pkemon thinking dragonite is best, and then it only beats vaporeon if it has dragon claw as it's charge attack).

Tier lists around the internet do not take into account overall effectiveness of pokemon let alone available pokemon, vaporeon is in a league of it's own, a 20dps quick attack and capable of a high dps charge move in aqua tail, other pokemon are lucky to even have 7dps as a quick charge and half the damage of vaporeons charge attack, and the fact that vaporeon has nearly double the HP of 75% of the pokemon, and the fact there is NO electric pokemon capable of beating him, he essentially has no weakess, and one on one very few can match the power of one.

Does not work. I have nicknamed Eevee "Rainer" six times and got four Jolteons and 2 Flareons.
It is and always will be random.

Anonymous said...

I used it like 10 times. was working fine for the first 7 times. seemed like they disabled it lately... didnt work twice but the last one was working again. dunno if they disabled and reenabled it ir if i was just lucky.

Unknown said...

Yes this definitely works!!!!

Anonymous said...

Based on their attack
Dig > flareon
Swift > favoreon
Body slam > jolteon

Hasn't been proved

Dose not work these days, I have named "Rainer" about 6-8 times and I got 4-5 flareon...

Unknown said...

Doesn't work any more. Named 4 Eevee Rainer. Restarted app. Got 3 Flareon :-(.

Attack also doesn't determine what you get.

It is just random now.

Anonymous said...

Named my strongest Eevee Rainer and it worked. Did it to a second Eevee and it became a Jolteon!
How do you guys explain that? its charge move is also very shitty, cp is good though. Id appreciate if you guys shared your on this incident.

Anonymous said...

It worked for me both time. I got Pryo and Rainer because I already had Spark.
I read up on it before doing it. It will only work one time and only for a Pokemon you do not have.

Anonymous said...

They apparently made it so that it only works once for each type now. Named my first Sparky and it became a Jolteon just like expected. If I tried again it would be random. I can still force a vaporeon or flareon though, until I used the trick for them as well.

Anonymous said...

The last 2 times I tried it, I tried getting a vaporeon and both times I got a jolteon. Idk if it's autocorrect or what but it's kind of annoying

Anonymous said...

I evolved 5 eevees, it worked for none of them

FeyJe said...

I have evolved Eeves into all three forms using these nicknames. It has worked for others I've talked to as well. The only 'thing' is it only works once for each form.

Anonymous said...

It says in the game about eevee if You Read about her that she "can have Three possible evolutions depending on her enviorment". Just make sure that if You wnt a flareon that she is surrounded by firepokemon at the time of the evolvation. It has Always worked for me, thought three out of three might not be especially "Scientifically proven"

Anonymous said...

It's still working. Evolved in the same time a Flareon and a Jolteon. Name trick is still working.

Nevenera said...

I think the attack type is also important, if I take into account the attack type as well as naming, then I get the one I want, I have two Vaporeon, two Flareon, and two Jolteon. The last set I got by naming and using the same body type attacks that I used for the first ones. The time before I named one pyro and got the one I wanted, but I named another and did not got a jolteon. But when I matched the attack type I got the right one.

I think attack type is more important than naming, but using both works 100% of the time for me 3/3 evolutions with 6/6 total desired evolutions with one that did not work..... lots of Evees near my house...

Supermmann said...

The nickname worked for me the first time but since has not...I now have 3 Vaperieons nicknamed sparky as I've been trying to get a higher power jolteon.....Supermmann

Anonymous said...

Hello everybody. It DOES work, but only once. After you get ONE Vaporeon, ONE Flareon and ONE Jolteon using the name trick, it won't work anymore. After you get one of each your forthcoming evolved Eevees will be random.

shing28 said...

I concur with the statement above. I got one of each and the trick work no more...

Unknown said...

I have all three the trick worked a long time ago tried again to get jolteon with different attacks and trick deffinately does not work any longer choked

Anonymous said...

My daughter tried entering Pyro to get the fire evolution. .... not only did she not get ANY evolution, but it wiped her evee candies to zero!
Because of her experience, I am unwilling to even try!

Anonymous said...

Just did it 2 seconds ago. Im pretty sure you actually have to copy it exact including capitalizing the first letter and spelling counts. Just got a Jolteon and Vaporeon with the two Eevees i evolved. 100% success rate.

Tanooki said...

It works fine, but it only works ONE TIME per evolution type so you can get 3 freebies (1 each type) and then that's it, it's random.

Anonymous said...

I tried using sparky for Jolteon but instead I got a ideal move set Flareon.

Anonymous said...

This works most of the time, probably like 95%, but I have had a few Jolteons evolve from pyro.

Unknown said...

It's true that it stops working after having one of each. But to touch on some of the other comments regarding each evolution... Yes, Vaporeon is significantly stronger than the other two, however Flareon has the second highest Attack stat, and Jolteon is the strongest Electric-type Pokemon in the game in terms of overall combined stats.

I have 14 Flareons over 1500CP, 7 Jolteons over 1100CP, and 7 Vaporeons over 1600CP and I'm sitting on 400 Eevee candies waiting for good IVs/CPs. Vaporeon is definitively stronger, but don't let anyone tell you the other two are useless. Flareon is better than Charizard and Jolteon is better than Raichu. In fact, Vaporeon is the only one whose stats DO NOT exceed those of its Starter-Pokemon same-type counterpart.

I would say some of the closed-minded, under-analyzed, and downright stupid things I hear from people at Pokemon Go hotspots and that I read on the internet blow me away, but the people of this age have also caused Kardashian fame, a Trump/Clinton presidential race, and the popularity of "music" so bad its shameful. I think what bothers me most is the somehow know-it-all attitude with which all the stupid is said.

Ive tried it to times, doing vaporeon and flareon. It does work!!!

Anonymous said...

Was checking out a pokemon evolution calculator and it looks like the nick name will only work when the CP of the evolved form is 1077 or under so an eevee with a CP of 513 for a jolteon would be as high as you could go

Anonymous said...

This used to work, I did it a number of times. Now - it does "not". So, maybe the person commenting on the CP Power is onto something. I'll have to try it based on that next time.

Anonymous said...

I was was late to the game, so I never had unlimited uses of this technique. I've read that it might only work once for each evolution. This has been my experience. My first Pyro and Rainer worked, but the second ones did not. The feature may seem to have been removed, but I believe there is a good chance that it has instead been limited to once each.

Anonymous said...

Had the same experience. Worked perfectly for awhile, but now will not. Perhaps CP was too high, but I cannot get a Jolteon.

Brenza said...

I confirm this no longer worked for me.
Got 2 flareons and 1 vaporeon from Sparkies =P

Unknown said...

Just nicknamed fire and got a flareon. Other nicknames did not work.

Anonymous said...

For those still wondering, giving Eevee the trainer name only works once for each evolution. So make sure you know it'll be a good evolution before using this trick.

Also, since the pokedex is updated and it looks like the gen 2 evols are available, anyone know how to get an Umbreon? Ive wanted one since July.

Anonymous said...

For me sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

BrownTea said...

Tamao = Umbreon
Sakura = Espeon

Anonymous said...

What about umbreon? What nickname does an Eevee use to evolve it into an Umbreon?
